Keeping Pets Cool in Summer: Practical Cooling Strategies

The Cooling Basics

Panting is a dog's main cooling mechanism; cats pant only when very hot. Both rely on you to manage their environment when temperatures climb.

At Home

• Keep indoor areas ventilated and shaded
• Provide cooling mats or a damp towel to lie on
• Freeze broth into ice blocks for a refreshing treat
• Run fans (out of reach) to improve air flow

Outdoors

• Walk at dawn or dusk on grass rather than hot pavement
• Bring water and offer it every 15–20 minutes
• Use a cooling vest for long hikes
• Never exercise a brachycephalic dog in heat

Grooming for Summer

Remove loose undercoat with regular brushing. For long-haired pets, a trim (not a shave) improves comfort; double coats should stay intact.

Cooling a Hot Pet

If your pet overheats: move to shade, pour cool—not cold—water over the body, offer small drinks, and contact a vet. Cold-shock from ice water can worsen circulation.

High-Risk Groups

Puppies, seniors, obese pets, and flat-faced breeds need the strictest limits on heat exposure.

Travel

Never leave a pet in a stationary car. On road trips, use crate fans and climate control, and stop for water breaks.
