Why Pets Hide Illness

Survival instinct makes cats and dogs conceal weakness. By the time signs are obvious, the problem may be serious—so watch closely for subtle changes.

Appetite and Thirst

A missed meal is worth noting; two missed meals warrant attention. Sudden increased drinking can signal kidney disease or diabetes.

Energy and Behavior

Lethargy, hiding, irritability, or withdrawal are nonspecific but important. A normally playful pet that suddenly sleeps all day needs checking.

Bathroom Habits

• Straining, blood, or changes in frequency in urine or stool
• Diarrhea lasting more than a day
• Accidents in housetrained pets

Breathing and Cough

Labored breathing, persistent cough, or wheezing are urgent, especially in flat-faced breeds.

Physical Checks

• Gums should be pink, not pale or bright red
• Eyes clear, no discharge
• Ears clean, no odor
• Coat should not be suddenly dull or matted

Vomiting and Nausea

Occasional hairball vomiting is normal in cats; repeated vomiting, especially with lethargy, is not.

When to Call the Vet

Any combination of the above, plus collapse, seizures, or known toxin exposure, is an emergency. When in doubt, call—early care is cheaper and kinder.
