Why Shedding Increases

Longer daylight and warmer weather trigger the loss of the dense winter undercoat. Most cats and dogs shed heavily for 4–6 weeks in spring.

Grooming Routine

• Brush daily during peak shedding; 2–3 times weekly otherwise
• Use an undercoat rake for double-coated breeds
• A deshedding tool removes loose hair before it lands on furniture

Bathing

A warm-water bath with a gentle pet shampoo loosens undercoat. Dry thoroughly and brush again. Avoid over-bathing, which dries the skin.

Nutrition for the Coat

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from fish oil or formulated diets improve coat quality and reduce excessive shedding from poor nutrition.

Reduce Hairballs

Cats swallow more hair while grooming in spring. Increase brushing and consider hairball remedies during this period.

Manage the Home

• Vacuum frequently with a pet hair attachment
• Wash pet bedding weekly
• Use washable covers on favorite furniture
