Stray vs. Feral

A stray cat was once socialized to people but lost its home; a feral cat is unsocialized and wary. Approach differs: strays may be adoptable, ferals belong outdoors managed humanely.

First Steps

• Observe from a distance; note body condition and behavior
• Offer food and water in a safe spot
• Check for a collar or ear tip (a cropped ear signals a neutered, managed feral)
• Post locally and scan for a microchip at a clinic

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

TNR humanely traps unowned cats, sterilizes and vaccinates them, then returns them to their territory. It stabilizes colonies, reduces fighting and nuisance, and is the accepted best practice.

Health and Safety

Avoid direct handling of unknown cats—use a trap or call a rescue. Wear gloves if you must. Keep your own pets vaccinated.

Adopting a Stray

A friendly stray may be rehomeable after a vet check, quarantine, and slow introduction to resident pets.

When to Call Professionals

Injured, sick, or aggressive cats, and large colonies, are best handled by experienced rescues or animal control.
