Despite the stereotype, many cats and dogs live happily together. Success depends on personalities, early experiences, and a careful introduction.

Before You Start

• Ensure both pets are healthy and vaccinated
• Provide the cat with elevated escape routes and a dog-free safe room
• Use separate feeding and litter areas

The Introduction

1. Scent first: swap bedding so each learns the other's smell
2. Barrier meetings: use a gate or cracked door for visual contact during meals
3. Leashed encounters: keep the dog on leash and calm; reward ignoring the cat
4. Supervised freedom: shorten distance and duration gradually

Reading the Signs

A cat that eats, plays, and uses the litter normally is adjusting. A dog that fixates, stalks, or won't settle needs slower pacing.

Managing the Home

• Never force interaction
• Give the cat vertical space the dog cannot reach
• Keep the dog's prey drive in check with training
• Maintain each pet's individual attention and routine

Red Flags

Persistent chasing, fear-based aggression, or stress behaviors (over-grooming, hiding) mean separate and slow down—or consult a behaviorist.
