Origin and History

The Laizhou Hong, also known as Zhuqiao Hong, Sulian Hong, Shandong Hong, Shanhong Quan, Huxing Quan, Chuanhong Quan, Laizhouhong Dog, Red dog of Laizhou, and Chinese Red Dog, originated in Zhuqiao Town, Laizhou City, Shandong Province, China in the 19th century. This Molosser-type working dog was bred by local enthusiasts using Xigou, Langqing Quan, and other native Chinese dog breeds, as well as Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers. The breed's development was influenced by the need for a robust, protective dog suitable for the agricultural and herding work of the region.

While the Laizhou Hong appeared in the 2019 World Dog Show in Shanghai under Group 11 - Non FCI Breeds, it remains a rare breed outside of China. Recognized by the China Kennel Union, it is classified in FCI Group 2, which includes breeds that are not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) but are recognized by their national kennel clubs.
