2026 Basic Dog Training: Starting from Scratch
Basic training is the first step in dog ownership, not only helping to establish good behavior habits but also enhancing the bond between the owner and the dog. Here are the methods and techniques for basic training.
Training Principles
- Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, praise, and play as rewards, avoiding punishment
- Consistency: Use the same command words and rules throughout the family
- Patience: Each dog learns at a different pace, be patient
- Short Sessions, Frequent Practice: Each training session should be 5-10 minutes, multiple times a day
Basic Commands
Sit
- Hold a treat in front of the dog's nose
- Slowly move the treat up, and the dog will naturally sit down
- Say 'sit' at the moment the dog sits and give the treat
- Repeat the practice until the dog can follow the command to sit
Down
- Make the dog sit first
- Move the treat from the nose forward and down
- Say 'down' when the dog lies down and reward
Come
- Crouch down and call the dog's name warmly in a safe environment
- Reward the dog generously when it runs over
- Gradually increase the distance and distractions
Shake
- Make the dog sit
- Gently touch the dog's front paw
- Say 'shake' when the dog raises its paw and reward
Socialization Training
The period from 3 to 14 weeks of age is the key period for a dog's socialization. During this time, expose the dog to various people, dogs, environments, and sounds to help them grow into confident and friendly adult dogs.
